Just with the beginning of the holy Ramzan the price of almost all the essential commodities, particularly those commodities which are consumed much during the Ramzan has shot up, causing untold inconveniences to the poor and the middle class people who are observing fasting.
The price of sugar, a must item for preparing Iftaries has shot up Tk 5 per kg. It is now being sold here at Tk 56 or more per kg as against of Tk.50. Price of gram (unbroken), an important ingredient of popular Iftari items has shot up Tk10.00 by per kg. It is now being sold in the local markets at Tk70 or more per kg as against of Tk.60 previously. Price of other Iftari items like fried rice (Muri) and flat rice (Chira) has also increased. Muri is now being sold here at Tk 100 to Tk 110 or more per kg according to qualities as against of Tk95 to Tk100 only a few days ago while Chira (flat rice) is selling here at Tk45 Tk50 per kg instead of Tk40.00 to Tk45.00.
Prices of seasonal (or summer) vegetables which are normally consumed by the Rozadars (who are observing fasting) have shot up abnormally. Kakrol is now being sold here at Tk100 per kg as against Tk30 during the corresponding period of last year. Usche/ Karola is now being sold here at Tk40 to Tk45 per kg as against of Tk25 in the last week. Gourd is selling in the markets at Tk.50 to Tk 100 per peace according to sizes instead of Tk20 to Tk 45 previously. Patol is selling at Tk50 or more per kg as against of Tk30 before the beginning of the holy Ramzan. Egg plant is selling at Tk50 to Tk60 instead of Tk30 in the last week. A small bundle of Lal Shak, a popular vegetables for Rozadars is in the markets at Tk15 as against of Tk5 previously. Price of all other vegetables is also high in the local markets. Green banana is selling in the markets at Tk 25 to Tk 40 per Haly of four according to sizes and qualities as against of Tk16 to Tk20 previously. Jhinga is selling at Tk60 and Kushi at Tk50 per kg.
Price of egg, poultry birds and meat has also increased. Egg produced in farms is now being sold in the local markets at Tk36 per Haly of four instead of Tk24 previously.
Locally produced egg is selling at Tk 44 to Tk48 per Haly of four according to sizes. Price of broiler poultry birds has also increased. It is now being sold here at Tk160 to Tk170 per kg according to qualities as against of Tk110 to Tk130.previously. Mother poultry is now selling here at Tk200 per kg instead of Tk150 to Tk170 previously. Beef is selling here at Tk 500 or more per kg as against of Tk450 only a few days ago. Mutton is selling here at Tk700 per kg instead of Tk.600 previously.
Supply of fish in the markets is far below the requirement and consequently, price is high. Small sized hilsa is found abundantly. But price is high. It is now being sold in the markets at Tk500 to Tk800 or more per kg according to sizes. Koi fish produced in the farms was so far was chief was also increased. It is now being sold here at Tk200 to Tk500 per kg according to sizes instead of Tk150 to Tk300. Prices of milk and milk products are high. But pure and unadulterated milk and milk products are hardly available here. Milk is selling in the local markets at Tk60 or more per kg while Ghee is selling at Tk.600 per kg.
