Price of vegetables slightly declines

The price of winter vegetables slightly decreased at the weekend on Friday, but still higher compared with that of the corresponding period of last year.
Meanwhile, the garlic and the lentil price marked a rise, while the rice price showed no sign of fall despite plentiful of production through out the year.
The price of some of seasonal vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, coriander leaf, long bean, local bean and radish dropped slightly. A small size of cauliflower and cabbage was selling at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per piece, while brinjal at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kilogram, long bean at Tk 55 to Tk 65, local bean at Tk 50 to Tk 60, and radish at Tk 35 to Tk 40, showing a plummet by Tk five to seven per kg in a week, according to traders.
The price of green tomato also witnessed a decline by Tk 10 to Tk 15, while
off-season vegetables like snake gourd and sponge gourd were traded at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg.
The price of mustard oil, radish, spinach, and green amaranth remained static, but with upward trend.
Kamal Hossain, a private service holder talking with the reporter said, usually vegetables become cheaper with the beginning of the winter season.
“But there is no such sign in this year, said Quayyum, another consumer of Mirpur Section-2 kitchen market.
Suja Uddin, a vendor at Santi Nagar kitchen market, said the price of most of the winter crops showed a slight downward trend in the wholesale market last week, but not up to the consumers’ expectation.
He said, the price of vegetables is at least 20 per cent higher in the growing hubs this year than that of last year due to the flood in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Jessore, Noakhali and Chittagong regions.
The price of lentil, both local and Nepalese varieties, dropped by Tk 10 and were sold at Tk 125 to 135 per kg at retail markets. Sugar price also declined by Tk two per kg and was sold at Tk 66 to Tk 68 per kg last week.
Garlic price further increased last week to Tk 200 to Tk 220 per kg (imported) and Tk 160 to 180 (local) per kg, -up by Tk 10 in a week.
Medium quality of rice like Brridhan-28, 29, Paijam, Kajol Lata, Parija and Ratna was selling at Tk 40 to Tk45 per kg at the weekend on Friday. Fine varieties like Miniket, Najirshail and Kataribhog remained static at Tk 45 to Tk 51 per kg and at Tk 52 to Tk 58 per kg in the city.
Wheat packet of two kilograms was selling at Tk 75 to 80, packet brown at Tk 42 to 44, loose wheat at Tk17 to 23 per kg, flour at Tk 32 per kg.
Cultivated Cat fish (Shing) was selling at Tk 350 to 550 per kg, barbel at Tk 400 to 600, butter fish at Tk 250 to 300, lobster at Tk 450 to 600 kg, shrimp (River) at Tk 400 to 550, Puti at Tk 200 per kg, cultivated koi at Tk 130 to 180 per kg and koi (river) at Tk 400, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 750 kg, pabda at Tk 710, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 300 kg, lata fish at Tk 180 to 220 and Eel at Tk 300 to 600 kg, sheat (boal) at Tk 300 to 550 kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 400, Baila at Tk 450 to 600 kg, coral fish at Tk 550 kg, river Pangas at Tk 350 kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 130 kg, Rajputi at Tk 300 kg, Tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, Ruhit at Tk 250 to Tk 380 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 230 -360 per kg.
