Price of sugar mark further rise

The price of sugar continued to rise in the Dhaka kitchen market despite adequate supply ahead of Eid-ul Fitr. Not only sugar, the price of chickens, beef, red meat, hilsha fish and shrimp rose at the weekend on Friday.
Sugar was selling at Tk 74 per kg, marking a rise by Tk six in one week and nine in two weeks. A year ago, it was Tk 40 per kilo.
Abdur Razzaque, President of Moulvibazar Baboshayee Aratdar Samity, an association of wholesalers, refused to take the blame of price-hike.
He said, sugar is being sold at Tk 54 to Tk 60 per kg at mill gates, which should not be more than Tk 50. Sugar was selling at Tk 63 to Tk 64 per kg on last Thursday at Moulvibazar.
Secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh, Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, said, the import cost of sugar is now Tk 26 per kg and its sale price must not be Tk 45 in the wholesale market after adding value added tax and other charges. As such, he said, prices of sugar should not be more than Tk 54 at the retail level.
The City Group, the Meghna Group, the Abdul Monem Group, S Alam, and Deshbandhu Group control the sugar market, sources said.
According to the Commerce Ministry, there was 1.7 million tonnes of sugar in the market whereas the annual demand for sugar was 1.5 million tonnes in the country in February.
A Commerce Ministry official said that more than 1.1 million tonnes of sugar was imported in the first nine months (July-March) of the last fiscal year.
Prices of some essentials have gone down owing to sufficient supply. The brinjal were selling at Tk 25 to Tk 35 per kg on Friday. Teasle gourd was selling at Tk 25 per kg, potato at Tk 20 to 24 , tomato at Tk 45 to 60, green chilli at Tk 50 to 70, french at Tk 30 to 40, carrot at Tk 45 , bitter gourd at Tk 25 to Tk 30, cucumber at Tk 30 to 40, spone gourd at Tk 30 to 35, arum at 45 to 50, papaya at Tk 30, bottle gourd at Tk 25 to 30, ash gourd at Tk 15 to 25 piece, coriander leaves at Tk 150 kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 300 kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 250 to 300 kg.
Price of local variety of fish has remained stable. The cat fish (Shing) was selling at Tk 400- 600 per kg on Friday, barbel at Tk 500 to 700 per kg, butter fish at Tk 300 to 400, lobster at Tk 500 to 700 kg, shrimp (River) at Tk 450-550 kg, Puti at Tk 270 per kg, puti (live) at Tk 350 kg, cultivated koi at Tk 170 to 200 per kg and koi (river) at Tk 600, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 1100 kg, chanda (small) at Tk 200 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 350 kg and Eel at Tk 400 to 600 kg, sheat (boal) at Tk 350 to 800 kg based on size, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 400, baila at Tk 450 to 600 kg, coral fish at Tk 550 kg, river pangas at Tk 350 kg, cultivated pangas at Tk 110 to Tk140 kg, rajputi at Tk 300 kg, tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, ruhit at Tk 250 to Tk 380 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 230 -360 per kg.
The egg (farm) was selling at Tk 30 per hali (four pieces), egg (local) at Tk 50 and egg (duck) at Tk 45 to Tk 48. Pigeon (per pair) was selling at Tk 180 to Tk 250 and four koil birds at Tk 200 only.
Beef was selling at Tk 420 per kg at South Goran. But prices of both broiler and layer chicken increased by Tk 10 per kg. Broiler was sold at Tk 170 to 190 while layer at Tk 185 toTk 200 per kg.
Five liters of Rupchanda brand canned soybean oil was selling at Tk 455, Rupchanda (two litres) at Tk 185, and loose super palm oil at 78 per liter, sugar price at Tk 58 to 65 per kg and molasses at Tk 70 to 120 and flattened rice at Tk 80 to 140 based on quality,
The red lentil at Tk 135 per kg, while the imported lentil at Tk 155 kg and mash at 148 per kg, grass pea (Kheshari) Tk 80-Tk 90 per kg.
Local onion was selling at Tk 35 to Tk 44 per kg while imported onion at Tk 28 to 32. Local garlic was selling at Tk130 to 140 on Friday while imported varieties (Chinese) of the item were sold at Tk 170-Tk 190 per kg.
Prices of coarse rice have increased Tk 2 to 4 per kg last week as the government started coarse rice procurement. It was selling at Tk 35 to 37 per kg, Pyjam at Tk 40 to 42 kg, Nazirshail brand of rice at Tk 44 to 52 kg, Minicate at Tk 44 to 50 kg, Kattari bhog at Tk 75, Pillau rice (Badsha bhog) at Tk 90 to 120 kg and Kalijira at Tk 115 to 130 kg only. Coarse flour was selling at Tk40 per kg and a 2-kg packet at Tk 75.
Seasonal fruits mango (Amropalli) was selling at Tk 80 to 110 per kg, Himsagor at Tk100 per kg, Langra at Tk 90, Rongpur regional mango variety harivanga at Tk 90 per kg, Guava at Tk 60 to 90, Lotcon (Narsingdi) at Tk 80 to 120. Date (Mariam) at Tk 800 per kg, other varieties of date was selling at Tk 200 to Tk 450 per kg on Friday. pineapple at Tk 20 to 40 per piece, watermelon (small) at Tk 50 to 70 per piece and guava at Tk 80 120 per kg.
