Price of onion suddenly increased high once again in Bagerhat

With the stalk of newly harvested onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen, its price showed a downward trend and it (locally produced) was being sold atTk.50 per kg as compared with Tk.70 or more last week. But all on a sudden its price shot up by Tk.20 per kg and it is now being sold at Tk.70 per kg instead of Tk.50. As a result, consumers are sufferings a lot of inconveniences in general and the commoners in particular. When contacted, Sardar Abdullah, a retailer of onion of the district market told this correspondent, the local whole sellers registered its price high all on a sudden in the plea of short supply of the commodity in the local markets following the prevailing of foggy weather in the north Bengal. The newly harvested onion is selling here at Tk.55 or more per kg as against of Tk.45 previously.
Position of potato, one of the most popular vegetables, has also gone up. Newly harvested potato is now being sold here at Tk.56 per kg as against of Tk.50 while the old potato is being sold here at Tk.45 or more per kg instead of Tk.40 in the last week.
But price of all kinds of winter vegetables is now within the reach of the commoners. Cauliflower, cabbage, onion flowers (locally known as Kaali), egg plant, bean, Barboti and cucumber are being sold here at Tk.30 per kg.
But the price of rice and edible oil is on the increase, adding sufferings to the consumers in general and the poor in particular.
