Onion selling at Tk 90: Price of essentials soaring amid coronavirus fear in Kishoreganj, Gafargaon

Prices of the key essentials items including rice, onion, pules, baby powder milk, vegetables and hand sanitizers soared abnormally in the kitchen markets of Kishoreganj due to the consumers panic-buying triggered by fears of coronavirus spread.
Shopers said , more customers than usual rushed to the kitchen markets and shops and punchased more goods than normal in the last few days.
The price of rice have increased Tk n 7-9 a kg at retail markets in the district town in the last three days. Fine quality Miniket, Najirshail, Tapi-boro, Paijum are selling at Tk. 55-70 per kg on Saturday. Medium quality Brridan- 28, 29 and Lata trading at Tk. 40-55 a kg, while course variety Swarna and BR-II at Tk. 38-42 a kg on the day.
Deputy Commissioner (DC), Sarowar Morshed Chowhdury told The New Nation that stern action will be taken against those who will be involved in hiking price of essentials and spreading rumors centening the centering the Covid- 19 out break. Gafargaon (Mymensingh) Correspondent adds : Anwarul Haque , a resident of Imambari area of Gafargaon Municipality, went to buy 4- kg onion at Tk 40 per kg and 2 kg garlic at Tk 45 per kg on Thursday night.
Later, about an hour later , he returned to buy lentils and heard the onion prices will be increased further. Anwarul Haque thought some more onions after hearing about the price-hike. He went to the place where he had bought the onion, and was stunned. He found that the previous price came out at Tk 40 to 90 per kg onions and garlic Tk 45 to Tk- 70. The seller said that the amount of onion is sold today is not for sale in the last few Eid. Brother took onion, price will be increased more.
Due to the fear of Corona that people may be imprisoned due to compassion, the common people are crowding in the market to buy necessities. The presence of women in particular is noteworthy. Asked why the price is so high, Abul Kasem , a wholesaler at Gafargaon market, said, Tk 40 kg per onion was sold even Thursday before noon. He has been selling onion Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg a day since 7.30 evening. He siad the sudden onion crisis caused prices to rise.
UNO Kaji Mahbub-ur Rahman said, thoughts of operating a mobile court is to control the market.
