Speakers at a discussion in Rajshahi Sunday underscored the need for taking preventive measures against those involved in cyber crimes to rein in the growing menace.
They added that cyber crime is the unlawful act wherein the computer information technology is used either as a tool or a target or both. Cyber crime covers many crimes.
Awareness should be raised among people about cyber crimes, related laws and punishment and said relevant professionals, experts and the mass media could play a responsible role in this regard.
The observations came at a seminar styled “Public Awareness about Cyber Security and Information and Communication Technology Law’ held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner.
Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury addressed the seminar as chief guest while SP of Rajshahi Alamgir Kabir and Deputy Commissioner of RMP Tanveer Haider Chowdhury spoke as special guests with SM Tuhinur Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education, Development and ICT) in the chair.
As the cyber criminals are using the technology, it takes time to know the nature of the crimes, the discussants said emphasizing on the need for making aware the officers-in-charge of different police stations, lawyers and judges about the cyber crimes and the related laws.
“With the advancement of information technology, the nature and rate of cyber crimes are increasing. Accordingly, the cyber criminals are also being brought to justice,” DC Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury said.
Internet is undoubtedly the most crucial technology of the modern world, the useful applications of it have not only made our life easier than ever before, it also plays a very important role in education, entertainment and business.
But it has its negative aspects too. It has ushered in a vast world for the criminal section of the society. The biggest threat of the internet is the security threat.
The discussants opined that the present government is expected to invest millions of taka to materialize their promise to build a digital Bangladesh. So the issue of cyber security must get due priority and a considerable portion of budget should be allocated to ensure cyber security.
