Preventing Covid-19 pandemic in Nilphamari through SHOW

Bangladesh reported the first three Covid-19 cases on March 8, 2020. After then first death case took place on 18 March 2020. Until now, the last case of detection is about 20 pc of total population of our country.  
After completion of six months on September 7, the total number of infected case in Bangladesh is 3, 27,459 and deaths 4,561. Bangladesh is the 14th worst affected country in terms of total caseload. This position is 29th in terms of death case.
The neighbouring India is the second worst affected country in the world in this regard and Bangladesh is second in South Asia. In this situation, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including compliance with the health rules, and the availability of PPE to the health care providers and the creation of public awareness can play a major role in Covid-19 prevention.
We all know that prevention is better than cure. Since there has been no effective treatment or vaccine for Covid-19 patient so far, we all have to give more focus on prevention now.
Addressing this commitment, with the financial support of Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and technical assistance of Plan International Bangladesh Rangpur Divisional Office, the SHOW (Strengthen Health Outcomes for Women and Children) project distributed Hygiene kits and PPE set to government and private health care providers of Nilphamari district hospital, Saidpur 100 bedded hospital, Mother and Child Welfare Centers, Upazila Health
Complexes and Union Health and Family Welfare Centres in August 2020. Moreover, they had organized an orientation and discussion meeting on the appropriate use of PPE in those health centers in September 2020. Regarding this, on 27 August 2020, a programme on PPE and Hygiene Kit distribution was organized at the Deputy Director of Family Planning office where Md. Shahjahan, Deputy Director-Family Planning had chaired and Dr. Khadija Nahid Eva, Assistant Director- CC and Dr. Roxana Begum, Medical Officer -Clinic of Mother and Child Welfare Centre, Nilphamari were present as special guests.
Mahfuzer Rahman, Health Specialist, SHOW Project, moderated the program where Dr. Omar Faruk, Project Manager, SHOW and Dr. Hrishikesh Sarkar, Programme Manager, Plan International Bangladesh, Rangpur Divisional Office, had delivered their valuable speeches on maternal and child health situation in Bangladesh affected by Covid-19 and a brief on SHOW project intervention.
Md. Shahjahan welcomed and appreciated the Covid-19 Prevention intervention of Plan International Bangladesh and said the distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hygiene Kits is a very effective and timely initiative and will contribute to the Covid-19 prevention in Nilphamari district.
On 31August, the first orientation meeting on the appropriate uses of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hygiene Kit was held at Saidpur Upazila of Nilphamari district.The Assistant Director-CC of Nilphamari District was the chief guest and Upazila Family Planning Officer, was in the chair in that programme. The similar orientation meeting had been held subsequently on September 2 in Jaldhaka and Kishoreganj Upazila, on September 3 in Domar and Dimla Upazilas and on September 6 in Nilphamari Sadar Upazila. It is worth mentioning that the health care providers who have received PPE included officers from the Department of Family Planning and Department of Health, Sub Assistant Community Medical Officer, Family Welfare Visitor (FWV), Pharmacist, Cleaner and all the Community Skilled Birth Attendants (CSBAs) and van drivers working on the SHOW project. The authority of the 100-bedded Saidpur Hospital and Nilphamari Sadar Hospital also got the hygiene kit materials. About 640 set PPE, 1,646 pairs of surgical hand gloves, 120 pairs of utility gloves, 120 piece masks, 295 pairs of gumboots, and 650 pieces hair protective cap were handed to above mentioned centers and personalities. Apart from this, 67 thermal scanners, 67 pulse oximeters, Hexisol-250 ml 708 pieces, Savlon-500 ml 1,180 pieces and soap-1,180 pieces were distributed among 67 institutions including District Sadar Hospital, 100 bedded Saidpur hospital, Mother and Child Welfare Centres, Upazila Health Complexes and 59 Union Health and Family Welfare Centers.
