UNB, Rajshahi :
President Abdul Hamid on Sunday stressed improving the quality of higher education as well as bolstering the knowledge of information and communication technology (ICT) among the country’s young generation to remain competitive at the global stage. “In the upbringing of our young generation, we have to make sure that they attain the international standard in the knowledge of information technology apart from traditional education so that they can win in global competitions because education is a pre-requisite to remain in the race,” he said.
The President said this while addressing the 9th convocation of Rajshahi University (RU) held on its campus. A total of 4,771 students received degrees at the convocation. Abdul Hamid, also the Chancellor of the university, said, “We’ll have to assemble all the branches of knowledge as well as modern curricula in the institutions of higher studies. Teachers, researchers and students have to follow that. We have to ensure that nobody can raise question about the standard of education.”
Mentioning that there is an inextricable link between education and research, Hamid said new knowledge has been created through research works which play an important role in fulfilling the existing demand of society. The people concerned have to know the types of research works being conducted in other countries of the world. “We have to chalk out a work plan taking the reality in mind. We have to uphold our own culture though we are connected with the globalised world. We have to make education a weapon to change society,” the President added.
Pointing at the graduates, Hamid said, “Today, you’re graduates, the higher human resources of the country. The convocation is giving recognition of your achievements on one hand and it is bestowing responsibilities on you on the other. These responsibilities are towards your family, society-above all towards the country and the nation.”
RU vice chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin and pro-vice chancellor Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan spoke on the occasion while vice chancellor of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia Prof Talat Ahmad delivered the convocation speech.
Earlier, Abdul Hamid inaugurated the newly constructed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall on the university campus.
