National Girl Child Day -2016 will be observed in the country with a view to creating awareness to stop early marriage and ensure the rights of gild children.
Marking the day, a procession of children will be brought out from the Institute of Fine Arts at Shahbagh in the city. The procession will end coming in front of the Shishu Academy.
Other programmes of the day include publishing journals and leaflets and holding discussion meetings and cultural functions.
President M. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday issued separate messages on the eve of National Girl Child Day.
They called upon all to come forward to guarantee security of girl children, ensure their rights and dignity and stop early marriage.
They appreciated the theme of this year’s Girl Child Day — ‘Let us stop child marriage and build a prosperous country.’
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said the girl children of today are women of the future.
“Therefore, it is our responsibility to establish the rights and security of every girl child,” he added.
Abdul Hamid said the present government is very sincere about the development of girl children.
The government has taken various steps for the education, health and nutrition of girl children, he said and added that these measures have been appreciated in the outer world.
An educated mother can groom her children as enlightened citizens, he said and called for creating social awareness to stop child marriage.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said she is delighted to know that the Girl Child Day is being celebrated across the country.
She greeted all girl children in Bangladesh and across the world on this occasion.
The Prime Minister said 45 percent of country’s total population are bellow 18 years.
Of them, 48 percent are girl children, she said, adding that the nation will go forward, if the security and rights of girl children could be ensured.
“We are working relentlessly to stop violence and discriminations against them,” she said.
The Prime Minister said the present government has implemented various programmes for welfare of girl children, including free education, stipend, free textbook and increasing number of female teachers.
Referring to different steps taken by the government, she said the incidence of child marriage has declined remarkably in the country.
Enrolment of girls in schools increased remarkably, Sheikh Hasina said, adding that women are now playing a significant role in the advancement of the nation.
The Prime Minister hoped that people of all walks of life would come forward alongside the government to ensure their security and protect their rights.
