UNB, Khulna :
Hundreds of patients were seen running from pillar to post to get treatment as doctors continued their strike in the district for the 4th consecutive day on Tuesday.
Medical services in all hospital, private clinics and diagnostic centres remained suspended due to the strike enforced by local chapter of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Bangladesh Private Clinic, Diagnostic Hospital Owner’s Association.
The strike was enforced on Saturday protesting attack on Gazi Medical Collage Hospital by Khulna University (KU) students over death of a fellow.
On Monday, doctors of government hospitals joined the strike expressing solidarity with the striking fellows.
Healthcare and medical services were hit hard as a two-hour work abstention was observed in all government and private hospitals and clinics, and pathological centres in 10 districts under Khulna division from 9am on Tuesday.
Two patients died at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Tuesday getting no treatment, alleged their relatives.
Dr Bangakamal Basu, councillor of BMA Central Committee, said they will continue their strike until their demand to arrest the attackers and abductors is met.
Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam, vice-president of BMA Central Committee, said they will withdraw their strike as soon as the attackers are arrested.
KU student Amit Roy, 23, was taken to the hospital after he sustained injuries in a road crash on Wednesday. Finding his condition critical, expert doctors at the hospital referred him to Dhaka Medial College Hospital. However, he died on the way to the capital.
As the news spread around, some 250-300 KU students appeared on the scene and went on the rampage at the hospital. They assaulted many employees and picked up Tanvir in an ambulance around 2am on Thursday.
Police rescued Tanvir from KU campus around 6am on the day.
