UNB, Dhaka :
Marking the Armed Forces day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday paid rich tributes to members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces who made supreme sacrifices in the Liberation War in 1971.
The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, placed wreaths at the altar of Shikha Anirban (eternal flame) at 8am. He was immediately followed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
After placing the wreaths, both the President and the Prime Minister stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the memories of the martyrs.
A smartly turned out contingent of the Armed Forces presented a guard of honour while bugle played the last post at that time.
Later, the President and the Prime Minister, also in-charge of the Ministry of Defense, signed the visitor’s book on the Shikha Anirban premises.
Earlier, on their arrival at Shikha Anirban, chiefs of the three services and the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division received the President and the Prime Minister.
After the wreath placing, the chiefs of the three services made a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at the Armed Forces Division.
On this day during the Liberation War in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces, comprising army, navy and air force, came into being and launched an all-out attack on the occupation forces.
This historic day is observed as the Armed Forces Day every year since the country’s independence.
