President, PM greet people on Shaheed Day

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday paid tributes to the martyrs of the Language Movement and greeted the people on the occasion of immortal Ekushey February.
In separate messages on the eve of the Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, they wished success of all programmes marking the great historic occasion.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid called upon the world people of all languages to be united and let the world’s almost defunct languages revive in their own communities. “The spirit of the language movement is rested in honouring others’ languages and cultures being imbued with own language and tradition,” he said.
The President with profound reverence paid rich tributes to the memories of the language martyrs who made their supreme sacrifices in 1952 to establish the rights of the mother language Bangla.
“On the occasion of the great Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, I extend my sincere thanks to all people of different languages of the world. At the same time, I pay tribute to the unfading memories of the martyrs of the Language Movement,” he said.
In a separate message on the occasion of the great Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the great Ekushey is the symbol of grief, strength and glory in the life of every Bangalee.
She extended her best wishes to Bangla-speaking people at home and abroad, and people of all languages and cultures around the world.
On this day in 1952, many valiant sons of the soil, including Rafiq, Shafique, Jabbar, Barkat, Shafiuddin and Salam, sacrificed their lives for protecting the dignity of our mother tongue, Sheikh Hasina said.
The Prime Minister paid her deep homage to the memories of the language movement martyrs and the greatest Bangalee of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had steered the language movement. She recalled with great respect the contributions of all other language movement veterans.
