President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday greeted the countrymen and all cooperators on the occasion of the 45th National Cooperatives Day to be observed in the country today.
In separate messages on the eve of the day, they appreciated the theme of the day ‘The philosophy of cooperatives is sustainable development’ and wished success of all programmes marking the day.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said a cooperative is an important weapon for attaining national development and progress.
He said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman attached special importance to cooperatives for establishing exploitation-free ‘Golden Bengal’ through alleviation of hunger, poverty and unemployment from the society.
The President called for making cooperatives a weapon to build a hunger and poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla.’ Cooperative has created new opportunities in the socio-economic sectors amid the expansion of open market economy and revolution of technology, he said and stressed the need for building ‘cooperatives of the new generation’ to seize the opportunities.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the Awami League government is working relentlessly to build a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh.
She recalled that the greatest Bangalee of all times Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave constitutional recognition to cooperatives to consolidate the economy of the war-ravaged country.
The present government is also giving importance to cooperatives to implement ‘Vision-2021’ and ‘Vision-2041’ she said, adding that the government has enacted time-befitting cooperatives laws.
She highlighted the steps taken by her government for the development of cooperatives and said cooperatives movement has expedited in the country because of those steps.
The rate of poverty has reduced drastically and the nation achieved 7.11 percent GDP growth, she said.
The Prime Minister hoped that the new entrepreneurs will play a role in building hunger and poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla’ of Bangabandhu’s dream by ensuring sustainable development through formation of cooperatives.
