President Abdul Hamid on Thursday inaugurated the construction work of the Itna-Mithamoin-Astagram highway project aimed to bring about socioeconomic changes in the haor area.
“When the project is completed massive socioeconomic changes will take place in the haor area as it would help establish direct road connectivity between the haor area and other parts of the country including Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong,” the President said while opening the construction work at Dakbangla playground here.
Besides the highway, the Taka 514 crore project envisages construction of Chilni, Dhaki and Bhatshala bridges. The Roads and Highways Department will implement the project that includes 29-km road, 7 box-culverts, 7 RCC and big bridges.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidur Quader, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, local MP Rezwan Ahmed Tawfiq, among others, spoke on the occasion. Zila Parishad Administrator Md Zillur Rahman presided over the function.
Highlighting different programmes taken up for the overall development of haor area, President Abdul Hamid urged all irrespective of party affiliations to extend cooperation for successful completion of the project.
“We all will have to work together for building a happy and prosperous country. We have to extend cooperation for development activities because everybody enjoys the benefits of development,” said the President.
Later, the President opened the piling work of Dhaki bridge.
