Stressing the need for ensuring science and information technology based education for turning the younger generation into a skilled human resource, President Abdul Hamid yesterday said the country needs skilled human resource to exploit its huge potential for development and progress.
“A knowledge-science and information technology based education can turn the younger generation into an efficient and skilled human resource to exploit the huge potential of Bangladesh . . . I hope that the public and private universities would play a role to produce skilled human resources through utilizing the existing facilities,” said the President while speaking at the 2nd convocation 2015 of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) here.
At the outset of his speech, the President paid respect to all language martyrs and recalled their contribution.
Referring to various programmes taken by the government for ensuring science and information technology based education, the President said the present government formulated the National Education Policy 2010 and ‘ICT in Education Master Plan’ has also been taken for ensuring the use of ICT in education.
Abdul Hamid said the government has also been implementing the ‘Higher Education Quality Enhancement’ project with a view to improving the quality of education at higher educational institutions. Apart from this, it has also set up ‘Bangladesh Research and Education Network’ to associate the country’s universities with foreign universities and research organizations, he added.
He said the area of higher education has been expanded with a rise in the number of universities in the country. Laying emphasis on continuous efforts to improve the quality of higher education at international level, the President reminded all that higher education is not limited to only book-based learning. Learned teachers not only teach students in universities but also unveil a new era of knowledge for students, he added.
Congratulating the new graduates of BUP, the President, who is also chancellor of all the universities, asked the graduates to work for the welfare of the people as well as the country.
“You are now the higher human resource of the country . . . today’s convocation is giving recognition to your achievement and on the other hand it is bestowing responsibilities on you and these responsibilities are towards your family, society, above all towards the country and nation,” he said.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid and BUP VC Major General Sheikh Mamun Khaled also spoke on the occasion.
Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury delivered the convocation speech.
Special Envoy to the Prime Minister Hossain Mohammad Ershad, Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Prime Minister’s defense advisor Major General (Retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddiqui, Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral M Farid Habib and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal M Enamul Bari and Faruk Khan, MP were present.
