UNB, Dhaka :
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday night alleged that no public issue and the country’s problems are now discussed in the ‘so-called’ 10th parliament for lack of democracy.
“There’s no one to speak for people as there’s no democracy in the country. The current parliament is like a haat. No public issue and the country’s problems, including farmers and industries’ ones, bank loot and share market scam are discussed in the so-called parliament,” she said.
Khaleda further said, “The MPs and ministers are
least bothered about public problems as they’re not elected by their votes. They’re busy with themselves. They won’t do anything for people.”
The BNP chief came up with the remarks while exchanging views with leaders of BNP’s peasant wing Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal at her Gulshan office.
Khaleda said the government has been in power resorting to killings, enforced disappearances, repressive acts and filing of false cases. “They’re using police to hang onto power. That’s why police are now saying they’re everything, and raising a slogan that hilsa is the king of fishes and police are the kings of the state. What a slogan it is indeed!”
She said farmers can claim themselves as the kings of the country as they grow food and feed people.
The BNP chief warned that the current regime will not be able to run the country for long using police and resorting to repressive acts. “People are the real source of power. People will extend support if they are served and the country’s welfare is ensured. People’s love and support are keys to staying in office.”
Khaleda urged the leaders and activists to Krishak Dal to stand by farmers and make them organised so that they can register their protest in a peaceful manner about their deprivation and thus ensure fair prices of their produces.
She also directed them to form Krishak Dal’s grassroots-level committees with genuine farmers.
The BNP chief slammed the government for the growing prices of agri-inputs and its failure to ensure fair prices of the produces farmers.
BNP acting secretary general and Krishak Dal president Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Krishak Dal general secretary Shamsuzzaman Dudu also spoke at the programme.
