The Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha instructed the concerned officials of the High Court Division to prepare the paper book of death reference in sensational Narayanganj seven-murder case on priority basis.
The Chief Justice on Sunday signed an office order containing the said instruction, said Md Sabbir Faiz, Additional Registrar (Administration and Judicial) of the HC Division of the Supreme Court.
The Chief Justice will assign a High Court (HC) bench to hear the death reference after the paper book is prepared, said Sabbir Faiz.If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence. The case documents and judgment copy reach the HC as death reference from the lower court within seven days of the judgment. A paper book contains all the details of a case, trial proceedings, statements, evidence, verdicts and other documents. The book is necessary for the HC to hear and dispose a death reference or an appeal. The death reference of the case reached the HC on January 22. Documents of the case were registered as death reference that day.
On January 16, Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court found 35 people, including 25 former RAB officials and expelled ruling AL man Nur Hossain, guilty of abduction and murder of seven people and destroying evidence in April 2014.
The court handed down death penalty to 26 people, including 16 former RAB men, and jailed nine other accused for various terms, from seven to 17 years.
On January 17, the CJ said that the Supreme Court interfered in the seven murder case and secured speedy trial. The confidence of the people in the Judiciary increased with the quickest disposal of the sensetional case.
