Nat'l Vitamin A Plus campaign begins today: Preparations taken to make programme a success

Public Health Department , Family Welfare Ministry and National Nutrition Institute have taken brisk preparations to make the National Vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign a success in Bagerhat district today ( February 9).
In this connection, Bagerhat District Public Health Department arranged a workshop on the topic in the auditorium of Civil Surgeon Office, Bagerhat with the local journalists of both print and electronic Medias with Dr. G K M Shamsuzzaman, Civil Surgeon of Bagerhat in the chair on Thursday in the morning in order to ventilate the matter widely among the people through the news medias. The key note paper on the topic was presented by Dr. Probir Kumar Bakshi, Medical Officer, Civil Surgeon Office, Bagerhat. He explained, vitamin ‘A’ is not produced automatically in the bodies of the children. So, they should require it from the outside and vitamin A capsule helps them to take it easily. He added, for want of vitamin ‘A’ children may suffer from blindness, night blindness and loss the resistance power to fight against diarrhea and various other infectious and fatal diseases. Not only that but also Vitamin ‘A’ reduces the rate of the mortality of children. So, all concerned should come forward to make the vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign a success. He further disclosed, some 17,976 children of 6 months to 11 months will be given vitamin ‘A’ capsules of blue colour and some 1, 42, 604 children from 11 months to 59 months will be given vitamin ‘A’ plus capsules of red colour from as many as 1,900 inoculation centers in the nine Upazilas and 2 Pourashavas- Bagerhat and Mongla in the whole of Bagerhat district on February 09. And some 3,800 volunteers and field workers are ready to make the campaign a success. It may be mentioned here that on July 14, 2018 some 17, 718 children ranging from 6 months to 11 months and some 1, 40, 224 children ranging from 12 months to 59 months were given vitamin ‘A’ capsule of blue colour and ‘A’ capsules of red colour respectively.
Ahad Uddin Haidar, President of Bagerhat Press Club while speaking in the workshop as special guest he urged the all concerned to make the vitamin ‘A’ capsule campaign a success for the greater interest of our future generations. The workshop was also addressed among others by journalists Shaikh Ahsanul Karim, Shaikh Azmal Hossain, M Akbor Tutul and Moazzem Hossain Majnui.
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has set a target of feeding vitamin A capsule to 62,953 babies on the day of National Vitamin A Plus campaign (2nd round)-2019 scheduled to be held on February 9.
Of them, 7,976 children aged six months to 11 months will be given blue-coloured capsule of high powered Vitamin A and 54,977 children aged one year to five will be given red-coloured capsule of high-powered Vitamin A.
The programme will be conducted in 384 centres including 343 permanent and 41 mobile ones in the city.
City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton reveled this at a press conference held at the city bhaban conference hall here today. RCC Ward Councilors Md Nuruzzaman and Ruhul Amin and Chief Executive Officer Rejaul Karim and Chief Health Officer Dr AFM Anzuman Ara Begum also spoke on the occasion.
Mayor Liton sought all-out cooperation of the journalists to make the forthcoming vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign a total success to address vitamin deficiency disorders and syndromes among babies.
During her concept paper presentation, Dr AFM Anzuman Ara Begum said vitamin ‘A’ supplement is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system, maintenance of cell function for growth, red blood cell production,immunity and reproduction.
The supplementation is also important for substantial reduction of death rate caused by diarrhea and measles.
Besides, various problems including eyesight and night blindness could be prevented and cured through successful implementation of the campaign, she added.
She also said the vitamin ‘A’ plus supplement is helpful for reducing the severity and duration of illnesses associated with pneumonia and diarrhea.
Referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline, she said children should begin vitamin ‘A’ supplement at the age of six months.
The national Vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign will be observed across the country to prevent childhood blindness, reducing child mortality and strengthening immunity.
BSS from Rangpur says: Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa today sought media cooperation in providing Vitamin A Plus Capsule to under-five children to increase their resistance to deceases.
Mostafa made the call at a press conference held at conference room of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) here for making the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign (second round)-2019 to be held on February 9 successful.
The campaign will be conducted under auspices of the Public Health and Nutrition Institute and National Nutrition Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Planning and assistance of the UNICEF.
Presided over by Chief Medical Officer of RpCC Dr Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz, City Coiuncilors, Secretary of RpCC Abu Saleh Md Musa Jongi and its Health Inspector Abdul Kaiyum attended the event.
Mayor Mostafa said 634 volunteers under supervisions of 77 supervisors and eight satellite monitoring teams will provide Vitamin A Plus Capsules at 295 outreach centres in all 33 wards of the city from 8 am to 4 pm on the day.
Some 19,233 babies (six to 11 months) and one lakh six thousand and 996 babies (12 to 59 months) will be administered with one dose of one lakh unit Vitamin A Plus Blue Capsule and one dose of two lakh unit of Vitamin A Red Capsule each respectively.
The city mayor said Vitamin A Plus Capsule has no side effect in general, parents must not be afraid if their babies would show vomiting tendency after taking the capsule and, if any, asked them to contact with health officials concerned immediately.
“Special steps will be taken to ensure administering of Vitamin A capsules to the under-five babies at bus stands, rail stations and other places to make the campaign a complete success,” he said.
The under- five babies, who were immunised with Vitamin A Plus Capsules anytime during the past four months period, do not need to be immunised during the campaign.
Mostafa urged the media workers for creating public awareness to make the campaign successful for preventing various diseases of babies and ensure their healthy growth by increasing disease resistant capacities.
Dr Taz discussed importance of continuation of Vitamin A supplementation for the under-five babies to prevent mal- nutritional blindness, especially night blindness, bitot’s spots and corneal lesions.
BSS from Jashore adds: National vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign (Second Round) will be held in eight upazilas of Jashore district on Saturday next in Jashore district.
.A total of 3, 22, 69 children of 6 months to 59 months age group will be administered vitamin A plus capsule in Sadar, Bagherpara, Abhaynagar, Monirampur, Keshabpur, Jhikargacha, Chaugacha and Sharsa upazilas of the district.
Civil Surgeon office sources said, under the programme, the health department has taken adequate measures to provide vitamin-A capsule (blue colour) for 36,162 childrens aged six months to 11 months and vitamin-A capsule (red colour) to 2,85,907 children of tweleve months to 59 months age group.
Some 4,578 volunteers, 875 field level health workers, 337 supervisors have been engaged at 2,279 centres in 92 unions and pouroshavas under the district to make the programme successful, the sources said.
Health experts called upon the parents, teachers, public representatives, civil society members and media persons to make the upcoming National Vitamin A Plus Campaign successful.
Civil surgeon Dr Dilip Kumar Roy said, vitamin A to all under five years babies would increase their disease resistant capacity, reduce death risks, prevent night blindness and other diseases. District EPI Superintendent Mirza Sarwar Hossain said, the campaign will remain opene at selected centres from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and also at the bus stands and floating places to bring all children under the programme.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Abdul Awal will inaugurate the vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign programme at Upasahar-Newtown Shishu Hospital at 9:00 am as chief guest.
