Preparations for holding Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community in the country, are progressing fast throughout the district as the commencement of the annual event draws nearer.
The 4-day long festival of the largest minority community will begin this year from October 19 with due respect and religious fervor and conclude on October 22 through the immersion of idols at different water bodies.
General Secretary of District Puja Celebration Parishad (DPCP) principal Paresh Chandra Saha said a total of 553 puja mandaps would be erected in all the seven upazilas in the district this year.
The number of puja mandaps decreased by 13 this year than the previous year, he also said.
Of the total, some 91 puja mandaps would be erected in Sadar upazila, 119 in Sundarganj upazila, 95 in Sadullapur upazila, 62 in Palashbari upazila, 108 in Gobindaganj upazila, 57 in Shaghata upazila and 17 in Fulchhari upazila.
After visiting different puja mandaps in the district town it was seen that the artists (Malarkars) are passing their busy times at their peak hours to give finishing touches to the images of deities to make the idols very attractive and nice looking to the devotees and the visitors.
Initiative has also been taken to provide uninterrupted power supply to the puja mandaps at nights to enable the Hindu devotees in offering their puja prayers, archana, kirtons, arati and other religious rituals, said executive engineer of BPDB Sukumar Lal Sarker.
Superintendent of police M. Ashraful Islam said tight security measures had been taken in and around of all the puja mandaps of the district by the law enforcing agencies to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the smooth holding the puja festival.
Earlier, a preparatory meeting to celebrate the festival peacefully was held at the conference room of DC here on October 06 with DC M. Abdus Samad in the chair.
BSS from Rangpur reports: An all-time record number of 841 mandaps are being erected to celebrate the greatest religious festival of Hindu community Durga Puja with huge enthusiasm amid tight security measures in the district this year.
The total number of erected Durga Puja mandaps was 776 last year in all eight upazilas in the district.
The information was disclosed at a meeting held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in the city on Sunday afternoon with Deputy Commissioner Md. Rahat Anwar in the chair.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Priyosindhu Talukder, Additional Superintendent of Police (District Special Branch) Abdullah Al Farooque, Senior District Information Officer Humayun Kabir, all eight Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs), President of the district unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad (BPUP) Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick, officials of district administration and law enforcement agencies, Presidents and General Secretaries of upazila units of BPUP addressed the meeting.
Officials of different government departments and law enforcement agencies, leaders of the district and upazila units of BPUP, political leaders, civil society members, socio-cultural activists and local elite participated in the meeting.
The meeting decided to deploy adequate number of police, RAB and Ansar-VDP members to ensure full proof security and providing uninterrupted supply of electricity to the puja mandaps for peaceful celebrations of the Durga Puja festivity.
BSS from Netrakona adds: The district administration of Netrakona would take all-out measurers to ensure fool-proof security for smooth and peaceful holding of Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the country’s Hindu community, in the district.
This was informed at a Puja preparatory meeting at the conference room of Netrakona Deputy Commissioner (DC) office.
Chaired by DC Dr Torun Kanti Shikder, the meeting was attended by Netrakona Superintendant of Police Joydeb Chowdhory, acting president of district AL Matiur Rahman Khan, civil surgeon Netrakona Bijon Sarker, joint secretary of district AL Nur Khan Mitu, mayor of Netrakona pourasabha Prasanta Kumar Roy, president of district Puja celebration committee Nirmal Kumar Das, its joint secretary Kashob Ranjan Sarker and executive engineer of Power development board, Netrakona Habibur Rahman.
