Preparations afoot for Durga Puja

The Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindu community, will be held at 576 puja mandaps under 13 upazilas of the district and 47 mandaps in Sylhet City.
The five-day long Durga Puja celebration will begin on September 26 and will end on September 30 across the city and district. Meanwhile, the idol-makers locally known as “Pals” are passing their busy times to give finishing touch to the idols.

A source at the police administration said this year they have divided the mandaps in three sections- general, important and more important, considering security factors. Earlier, a preparatory meeting with Hindu community leaders and others to celebrate the festival peacefully was held at the Police Lines conference room here on today with Police Super Md. Monirazzaman in the chair.
Superintendent of Sylhet Police said they have taken all necessary measures so that the Hindu community can celebrate the festival peacefully.
During the meeting, the leaders of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parished District and Upazila units decided not to strike the drums and other musical instruments during the time of prayers of the Muslim community. A decision was also taken to open a control room in the district and each upazilas during the festival to watch the law and order situation in all the puja mandaps.
Initiative has also been taken to provide uninterrupted power supply to the puja mandaps at night to facilitate the Hindu devotees in offering their puja prayers, sources said.
Advocate Nironjon kumar Day,Prodip Bottacharjo, Journalist Sha Didar Alom Noble , Rojot Kanti Gupta also spoke the meeting. They also said the numbers of idols have increased this year.
Bagerhat Correspondent reports: The artisans are passing their busiest time in erecting idols of Goddess Durga as preparations are afoot to celebrate Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the Hindu community in Bagerhat district.
Abanish Chakrabaraty (Sona), General Secretary of Bagerhat district unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (BPUP) disclosed to The New Nation, as many as 608 Puja Mandaps (pandels) are being erected in Bagerhat district town and its all the nine Upazilas. The number of Puja Mandaps in the district town is 12 while the highest number of Puja Mandaps (106) are being erected in Chitalmari Upazila.
BSS from Narsingdi adds: Adequate preparations for peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Bangali Hindu Community, is progressing fast in the district.
District Puja Udjapon Parishad and district administration officials said the five-day festival will begin on September 26 and conclude on September 30 through the immersion of idols in rivers.
President of the District Puja Udjapon Committee Professor Surjakantha Das told BSS today that a total of 324 puja mandaps would be erected in the six upazilas of the district this year.
Of them, 97 puja mandaps would be erected in Sadar upazila including 31 in Narsingdi pourashava and 14 in Madhobdi pourashava, 68 in Shibpur upazila, 61 in Raipura upazila, 43 in Monohardi upazila, 37 in Polash upazila and 18 in Belabo upazila. Artists and idol-makers are passing busy time for making idols of the Goddess Durga.
BSS from Jamalpur adds: Adequate preparations for peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Bangali Hindu community is progressing fast in the district.
President of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, Jamalpur District unit, Birendra Chandra Das said artisans are passing busy time for erecting of idols of Goddess Durga. He said the puja will begin on September 26 and conclude on September 30. Sources familiar with the puja said 197 puja mandaps would be erected in the district this year.
Of them, 61 puja mandaps would be erected in sadar upazila, 40 in Sarishabari, 27 in Madarganj, 23 in Dewanganj, 19 in Islampur, 15 in Melandaha and 12 in Bakshiganj upazila.
BSS from Gaibandha reports : A total of 573 mandaps will be set up in all the seven upazilas of the district this year to celebrate the Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Bangalee Hindu community.
Ranajit Bakshi Surja, president of District Puja Celebration Committee (DPCC), said of the total, some 91 puja mandaps would be erected at Sadar upazila, 101 at Sadullapur upazila, 129 at Sundarganj upazila, 63 at Palashbari upazila, 117 at Gobindaganj upazila, 60 at Shaghata upazila and 14 at Fulchhari upazila. The number of puja mandaps has increased by 18 this year comparing to the previous year, he said. The five-day long puja will begin on September 26 and conclude on September 30 through the immersion of idols of Durga goddess at different water bodies, he added.
Preparations for holding the Durga Puja are progressing fast throughout the district as the commencement of the annual event draws nearer, said general secretary of DPCC Principal Paresh Saha.
