Sufficient cattle supply, slaughter places selected: Preparation afoot to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha in dists

With two days left for Eid-ul-Azha, the sacrificial animals are being brought to 154 cattle markets in all 59 upazilas and Khulna City Corporation (KCC) in the division.
The cattle traders and market leaseholders are now passing very busy times.
Meanwhile, people, especially service holders, are preparing themselves to buy cattle after getting the monthly salary as well as Eid bonus.
Livestock Office sources said the demand for sacrificial animals in 10 districts under the Khulna division is around 8.57 lakh this year. Till now, 13 lakh 99 thousand and 821 cattle-heads are in stock in local farms and houses. Every year, the livestock office fixes possible demand through considering five percent increasing animals.
The demand for sacrificial animals in Khulna this Eid-ul-Azha could be met almost entirely with locally-reared livestock.
Even 50 percent of the division’s demand could not be fulfilled with local livestock before, but over the last five years, the situation has changed and now hundred percent of the demand can be met with local stock, said Dr. Sukhendu Shekhar Gayen, director of Khulna divisional Livestock Office.
“This became possible after farmers started rearing cattle in large scale in the region as they found it profitable,” he said, adding that at least 5.45 lakh cattle will be sent outside after meeting the demand of Khulna division.
Some days remain for the Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of the Muslim community, the cattle will be ready for sacrifice within this time, the official said.
According to the Livestock Office, the demand for sacrificial animals in Khulna division this year stands at 8, 57,601 while the farmers of the division reared 13, 99,821 sacrificial animals, 38 percent more than the demand, targeting the holy Eid.
This year, 4, 02,553 cows have been reared while 5,916 buffaloes, 9, 55,303 goats and 36,038 sheep and other animals have been reared in the division.
BSS from Rangpur reports: Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) has selected 117 spots in all 33 wards of the city for slaughtering sacrificial animals by the city dwellers on the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festivity.
 Panel Mayor of Rangpur Alhaj Md. Mahmudur Rahman Titu disclosed the information at a press conference held at the conference room of the City Bhaban here Tuesday.
A total of 117 Imams and 117 butchers will remain standby at these 117 fixed places for slaughtering the sacrificial animals on the Eid day in all 33 wards of the city.
 “We are distributing leaflets and inspiring the citizens using loudspeakers at the ward levels in slaughtering sacrificial animals at the designated spots to ensure proper waste management,” Titu said.
He said an adequate number of cleaners would remove animal wastes using trolleys and rickshaw vans while 30 tractors would carry sacrificial animal wastes from noon to complete disposal of those within a minimum possible time.
Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Md. Ruhul Amin Miah also addressed the event participated by officials and ward councilors.
BSS from Khulna adds: The authorities of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) have fixed 142 spots in the city for slaughtering sacrificial animals and requested the city dwellers to use those places during the ensuing holy Eid-ul-Azha.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Environment Development Standing Committee at Shaheed Altaf auditorium with KCC Ward Councilor S M Khurshid Ahmed in the chair.
 Among others, teachers, councilors, senior officers of the KCC, citizen and religious leaders (Imam) attended the meeting.
 The meeting also decided to form a 15-member committee at each of the 31 KCC wards with each ward councilor and secretary to act as its president and secretary respectively.
 “A total of 142 spots have been fixed in the KCC area for slaughtering sacrificial animals. The number may not rise as we have already sent the list to the Prime Minister Office (PMO) last week,” said Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, senior veterinary surgeon of KCC, on Tuesday.
A total of 175 slaughterers from different Madrasas will be assigned for slaughtering at the 142 spots on the Eid day, he said, adding: “The city dwellers may be decided to slaughter their sacrificial animals by their respective Madrasa’s slaughterers.”
“A campaign will begin from today untill the Eid day to raise awareness on slaughtering the sacrificial animals in designated spots and elsewhere in the city participating by the KCC councilors,” the veterinary surgeon said, adding that Imams of all mosques will also run the awareness campaign during ‘Khutba’ at the Jumma prayers before Eid.
The designated slaughtering grounds will have butchers, cleaning staff as well as an ‘Imam’ to conduct the slaughtering of sacrificial animals on Eid day.
 Rezaul Karim mentioned that KCC staff will be deployed for seven days from the Eid ul Azha for cleaning animals’ garbage to ensure an environment-friendly atmosphere in the city.
The meeting also requested different community leaders, public representatives and civil society leaders to create awareness and motivate the city dwellers to slaughterb animals on the KCC chosen places for their great interest, he added.
