System loss expected to reduce largely: Prepaid power meters in 21 SW dists by 2021

The authorities have undertaken a project to introduce prepaid electricity meters in 21 districts, including Khulna, of the south-western region of the country by the year 2021.
A total of 11 lakh subscribers will be brought under the prepaid metering service in the districts during this time.
Sources said the work for installing 5,000 prepaid digital meters for the households under Khulna Hazi Mohsin Feeder in the first phase of the project is going on in full swing.
Already 2,150 prepaid meters, out of the 5,000, have been installed in the first phase of the project while in the second phase 31,000 customers will be brought under the prepaid meter service.
Sources at the Power Division, said once the project is implemented, system loss in power distribution of the region will reduce remarkably.
Apart from this, it will enhance the quality of customer service and increase revenue income fro electricity sector.
At present, a total of 8,26,795 customers have been enjoying the power facility in the 21 districts including Khulna, Barisal and greater Faridpur district, said sources at West Zone Power Distribution Co. Ltd (WZPDCL), the organisation implementing the project.
There are 10,521 kilometer electricity lines with 5,781 transformers to give power supply to the big and small businesses, industrial units, mills and factories and households in the WZPDCL’s area.
The government has taken an initiative to install prepaid meters in different phases in the 21 districts for giving developed services to the customers.
Primarily, about 2,150 customers under Khulna Hazi Mohsin Feeder have been brought under the service while 2850 more customers will get the facility further.
Besides, a vending station has been opened for recharging cards of prepaid meters at Shere-e-Bangla Nagar Road in Khulna city.
The customers will recharge and purchase cards from the station.
Meanwhile, work for setting up two vending stations-one on Hazi Mohsin Road and another on South Central Road-is underway.
