Newly- harvested potato appeared in Bagerhat markets . So, the consumers normally expected that the price of old potato would come down. But their expectation was belied when the price of the commodity suddenly shot up Tk.5.00 per kg instead of coming down. It is now being sold here at Tk.35.00 or more per kg as against of Tk.30.00 per kg in the last week. The commodity was sold here at Tk. 22.00 per kg only 2 weeks ago. On the other hand the newly harvested potato is being sold here at Tk. 120.00 per kg. It is out of reach of the common people.
The price of onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen has once again shot up Tk.10.00 per kg. The locally produced onion is now being sold here at Tk.60.00 per kg instead of Tk.50.00 only a few days ago. Imported Indian is selling here at Tk.50.00 kg. Onion flower appeared in the district markets. But its price is out of the reach of the common people. The commodity is selling here at Tk.70.00 or more per kg as against of Tk.120.00 in the last week.
The winter vegetables appeared in the local markets abundantly. But their prices did not come down accordingly. Tomato (ripe) is being sold here at Tk.100.00 per kg, green tomato. at Tk.50.00 per kg, cauliflower is selling here at Tk.35.00 per kg instead of Tk.40.00 in the last week. Cabbage is selling at Tk.30.00 per kg, Gajar at Tk.40.00, Barbati at Tk.40.00, egg plant at Tk.35.00 to Tk.40.00, bean at Tk.30.00, reddish at Tk.25.00, Karalla t Tk.40.00, Okra at Tk.30.00 and arum at Tk.40.00.
Supply of fish is quite in sufficient in the local markets and consequently the price is high. Hilsa is now being sold here at Tk.600.00 to Tk.1200.00 per kg according to different sizes, Coral at Tk.400.00 to Tk.600.00, Med fish at Tk.500.00 per kg. Price of cultivated Pangus and cultivated climbing (Kai) is combatively low. Pangus sis selling in the local markets at Tk.125.00 Tk.150,00 and Kai at Tk.150.00 or more. But naturally fish like Kai, Pangus, Shing, Magur etc. are not available here at all.
