Post-polls clashes leave 60 injured in Sylhet

At least 60 people were injured in two separate clashes after the union parishad polls in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district on Friday. Witnesses said an altercation ensued between the supporters of newly elected Sadar Union Parishad member Kazi Nazrul Islam and defeated member candidate Ashraful Alam over the polls results at about 12:30 pm. At one stage, both the groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 20 people injured. The injured were rushed to Chhatak upazila health complex. Besides, 40 people were injured in a clash that ensued after the supporters of defeated member candidate Nurul Haque swooped on the supporters of elected member candidate Shafiqul Islam over election in Kalaruka union parishad at about 11:30 am. Of the injured, 11 people were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. — Sylhet, Apr 2 (UNB)
