XINHUA, Lisbon :
Portugal’s southern Alentejo region broke its tourism record for overnight stays and revenue in 2014, according to figures released by the Tourism Promotion Agency of Alentejo on Monday.
Tourism in the region generated around 250 million euros (298 million U.S. dollars) last year, with a global fixed income of 20 million euros (23.9 million dollars) in accommodation, which excludes rural tourism and camp sites.
The agency also said that the number of overnight stays by tourists in Alentejo has risen by 25 percent, meaning 22 million euros (26.3 million dollars) more for the region.
“These figures indicate that we are on the right track and leave clues as to the strategy we should follow in the next years,” said Vitor Silva, president of the Tourism Promotion Agency of Alentejo.
