Port city recalls Sheikh Kamal on 66th birth anniversary

The port city of Chittagong yesterday recalled with tribute Sheikh Kamal on his 66th birth anniversary with sports lovers, civil society figures and political leaders and activists rallying in different programes.
A 1971 Liberation War veteran and pre-independence student leader who played a crucial role in mobilizing mass movement against the then Pakistani junta, Kamal is the elder son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“(But) the history has recorded his role also as a leading sports organizer and recalls him for his passion for cultural activities,” said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obidul Kader, as he joined a memorial meeting organized by the Chittagong Abhani Limited.
Sheikh Kamal was the founder of the sports club in post independence period in Dhaka while a number of sports lovers and organizers rallied at the premises of the club’s port city chapter and paid homage placing wreaths on his portrait there in the morning. Abhani President Ruhul Amin, presided over the function while the minister addressed as the chief guest the function also joined, among others, by Mayor of Chittagong and general secretary of city Awami League AJM Nasir Uddin and Shamsul Hoq Chowdhury MP. Leaders of Chittagong city AL paid tributes to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreath at his portrait the at city’s Darul Fazal Market party office.
