Mohammed Badrul Ahsan :
Winter clothe vendors across the city expressed their dismay over the poor sales of their seasonal cloths, traders claimed.
They said although their seasonal sales in the last couple of days increased slightly, it could not make any impact to their fate.
Almost all the vendors said huge amount of seasonal cloths remains stock-piled in their showrooms and godawns due to this years’ low cold situation.
Most of them could not even manage rent of shops and wages of staffs in their yearly pick season due to the poor sales.
Besides, vendors also expressed their fear of becoming bankrupt as they could not pay a single penny against bank loans.
“People of all ages used to gather in our stores this time every year. But this years’ situation is different, we could even
We usually try to new designed warm cloths ahead of winter season and sell most of those in November to January period. But this year is exceptional to us as we are still waiting for a cold wave although it tis the fag end of the season,” Naima Ferdousi, proprietor of Tangail Fashion house at city’s Palwal Super Market told The New Nation on Saturday.
She also said if they fail to sell out the stock of warm cloths, they would not be able to arrange capital to invest to purchase cloths for other seasons.
However, the scenario of makeshift stalls on the footpath was found worst as many of them invested their full capital in purchasing worm cloths expecting profit but the reality is seen completely different.
“We could not sell off ten percent of our stocks. What will we do with the remained cloths as we neigher have enough capital to reinvest for other seasons nor have space to store those,” Kalam Mia a makeshift shop owner said.
“We cannot even manage our daily bread for the last two months from sales due to poor demand,” he added.
Meanwhile, visiting the city’s whole sell hub – Banga Bazar, it was noticed that almost all the shop owners were sitting idle for want of customers.
“Thousands of traders from across the country would throng to our market this time. We would not care to response to the retail customers. But this year we are waiting for customers for even a single cloth,” Ahmed Sattar, a shop owner of Banga Bazar said.
“If the scenario doesn’t change in the rest of the season, then most of our fellow businessman may face bankruptcy,” he added.
Meanwhile, the scenario of other markets of the city also found more or less same. Almost all the shopkeepers of New Market, Bashundhara City Super Market, Karnaphuli Garden City, Mouchak, Eastern Plaza and other markets were found passing idle time for want of customers.
Traders, however, urged the government to either manage fresh bank loan for the strapped businesspersons or wave of interest on their loans for the sake of thousands of traders and their dependants.
They also said their sales would not increase in the rest of the season if new cold wave starts as it is the last time of the winter.
