Poor people throng Sylhet footpaths for Eid shopping

Low- income people go on a shopping spree in the footpath markets in the Sylhet divisional City on the eve of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The low-income group, especially slum dwellers and street people in the city, is crowding footpath markets for buying essentials, especially clothes, at cheaper rates.
A large number of such type of shops have sprung up depending on labour areas of the district including, hocker Market, Hasan Market, Surma point, Zinda bazar area.
Ali, a slum dweller who came with his wife for shopping, said they have purchased only 1.5 kilograms of clothes at Tk 220 for their two daughters.
Compared to previous years, prices of different items, including salwar kamiz, sari, pajama, panjabi, shirt, T-shirt and readymade garments for children are higher this year, he added.
Hossain Ahmed, a shop owner of such Hocker market, said they buy these old clothes from Dhaka, Chittagong and other places and then sell by weighing.
The most of the shoppers come to buy the clothes after evening as all of the buyers are day labourers, he said.
Lots of people, most of them are day labourers, were seen crowding around these makeshift stalls on the footpaths to do Eid shopping.
The outfits of numerous colors and designs are available at these makeshift stalls.
When the riches are rushing towards big shopping malls, the poor’s are trying to meet up their demands from here.
A rickshaw puller who lives a slum at Kodomtoly said he has come here to buy clothes for his one daughter, one son, wife and elderly mother.
To buy all these, he has to work hard and peddle three hours more in a week, he said.
The vendors claimed that the volume of sale is much less than the previous year.
