Poor food quality at DU hall’s canteen

The food prices of Dhaka University(DU) residential Hall’s canteen and food stalls have been increased after the hike of essential commodities, but the quality of food has been depressingly bottom.
The students claimed that despite the price hike, the quality of the food has not been increased an ounce and something rotten foods are served.
Moreover, the students of Masterda Surja Sen Hall have locked up a food shop named ‘Taslim Food Corner’ for serving rotten food on Saturday night.
Witnesses said a student took a parcel from the shop in his room at night. Later, he found the foods were rotten. He came to the shop instantly and alleged about the food. The other students at the shop also found that the foods were rotten. They, then, locked the shop.
Earlier, on 26 August, the students of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall found the spoiled rice with insects supplied at lunch time. The students protested this and engaged in a dispute with canteen Manager. At the one stage, the agitating students shut the canteen.
Later, The Hall Administration have found proof and locked the canteen for supplying rotten foods while they saw the environment of the kitchen is totally unhealthy.
The students meanwhile alleged, food prices have increased, but fish, meat pieces have become smaller as well as coarser rice is being fed.
“Before two months, three meals a day would cost around Tk 100-110, but now the cost has gone up to Tk 150-160,” Rokib Rana Masud, resident of Shahid Serjeant Zahurul Huq Hall said.
The correspondent found after visiting some canteen that beef and rice cost Tk 55-60, while poultry chicken costs Tk 45-50 per piece. A piece of fish costs Tk 40-45 and students have to whip out Tk 35 for egg curry.
“Healthy food is not being served in the canteen. They always face questions about cooking, serving food in unhygienic environment and the values of food, but we had not received any positive changes yet,” Shaheed Mia, resident of Sir A F Rahman Hall said.
