BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday reiterated the party’s call to the government to start dialogue for resolving the remaining political crisis before the next general election.
“We have asked the government to hold dialogue with the political parties for resolving the present political crisis. We are not saying what we are saying has to be accepted,” said Mirza Fakhrul in a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.
The pro BNP faction of the BFUJ and DUJ organised the discussion to mark World Press Freedom Day.
Mirza Fakhrul questioned the government, “You are speaking about holding election according to the Constitution. Which Constitution do you speak of ?
“The government frequently says that they are democratic. But their behaviour says that they are autocratic. We asked them, come to the table to discuss with the BNP and other political parties. Talk and resolve the existing problems facing the election. Go for polls after resolving those crises,” he said.
The BNP leader said, “Without resolving the problems, people would not accept the election as done on January 5, 2014.”
Mirza Fakhrul said that the government would fall if journalists united to realise their demands, including freedom of press.
“If all the journalists be united and ask the government to grant freedom to publish the truth, the government cannot stay in power for long. They must go down,” the BNP Secretary General said.
BFUJ President Ruhul Amin Gazi presided over the programme. Bangla Daily Amardesh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman, BNP Vice-Chairman Shawkat Mahmud, BFUJ (Pro-BNP) Secretary General M Abdullah, DUJ (Pro-BNP) President Kader Gani Chowdhury, National Press Club Joint General Secretary Ilyas Khan, DUJ General Secretary Shahidul Islam and Vice-President Shaheen Hasnat among others, were present.
