bdnews24.com : The Election Commission has said several Upazila Parishads (UP) will go to polls in February as their terms are coming to an end. Bangladesh has 147 Upazila Parisads. Tenures of over 100 of them will end by mid-February. “Terms of some Upazilas are ending in the middle of February. There is a legal obligation to hold elections there,” Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Saturday. After a meeting with the LGRD and Primary and Mass Education Ministry officials earlier in the day, Ahmad said a decision on publishing the UP polls schedule would be taken soon. However, Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations are slated for February and the tests might coincide with polling in some areas. “We want to hold elections without causing problems to the students,” Ahmad said.
