Polls in 97 UZ on Wednesday

Elections to 97 upazilas are going be held on Wednesday next in the first phase. The BNP-led alliance is now taking UZ election issue seriously and hoping that its candidates will bag majority. BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said that the government appears imbalanced as BNP and its allies are taking part in the elections. People will elect the BNP-backed candidates, as they are annoyed with the government. Addressing a discussion on Friday, he said that the government is hatching conspiracy to make the elections like the January-5 polls. The ruling party leaders are using government vehicles violating the electoral law and obstructing campaign by BNP-backed candidates in several parts, he alleged. Swadesh Jagoron Parishad, a pro-BNP organisation, arranged the discussion at the National Press Club in the city. Former BNP MP Helen Zerin Khan, president of Swadhinata Forum Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah. Juba Dal senior vice president Advocate Abul Kalam Azad addressed the function, among others, with Kamruzzaman Selim in the chair. Goyeshwar said that that their decision of boycotting the Januray-5 polls was right and it will be proved in the result of the upazila elections.
