Polling in 30 UPs ends

Second round of Union Parishad (UP) polls in 30 Ups in three upazilas in Chittagong ended here amid stray incidents on Thursday .
 Three persons were killed in Sandwip Island during polling .Police and eyewitness said three unidentified people were killed and a police constable was injured critically at Baoria union of Sandwip upazila of the district shortly after the end of the voting.
Supporters of an independent candidate, Zillur Rahman, attacked Char Bauria Government Primary School around 4.10 pm, police said. “Police opened fire in self defense. Three people died and a police constable was injured,” said Abdul Awal, additional superintendent of Chittagong police.The critically injured police was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Election officials said the overall polls were held in a fair and peaceful manner. Talking to journalists, they claimed the voters cast their votes amidst enthusiasm and festivity excepting a few centers in Sandwip. “The turn-out of voters was quite satisfactory.
 We took necessary steps wherever any irregularities were found”, they added. Superintendent of Chittagong district police A K M Hafiz Akhter told that the overall situation during the voting was quite satisfactory and a huge number of the voters exercised their rights of franchise.
A total of five lakh 44 thousand 387 voters from 281 polling centers of 30 UPs cast their votes from 8 am and the voting continued till 4 pm without any break. The government announced Thursday a public holiday in the polling areas of Sandwip, Sitakunda and Mirarsari upazilas.
Members of law-enforcement agencies discharged their duties in each center in the upazilas. EC officials said journalists, local NGOs and different agencies observed the UP polling in Chittagong.
Four executive magistrates and one judicial magistrate have been deployed in each upazila alongside with three thousand law enforcers, including police, RAB and BGB, to maintain law and order.
