UNB, Dhaka :
Non-government organisation Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) has said though the recently held Rangpur City Corporation poll was held in a free and fair manner, it can’t be projected as a model for next national elections as there are lots of impediments in holding parliament polls under political government.
Speaking at a roundtable on Thursday at National Press Club, Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Mazumder said politicisation in police and administration
became a main hindrance in holding free and fair elections under political government. He said in the past the incumbents returned to the power whenever the elections were held under political governments. Sujan secretary presented keynote at the roundtable on Rangpur polls while Asif Nazrul, a Professor of Department of law of Dhaka University and former bureaucrat Shafiul Alam spoke, among others.
Asif Nazrul recalled that then opposition BNP won in all city corporations’ polls preceding to the 2014 national elections. Holding of, what he dubbed, a one-sided polls in 2014 was the culmination of the messages government got from the results of city polls where BNP candidates won by big margins.
