Political initiative to end violence against women stressed

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki said political initiative is vital for stopping all kinds of violence against women in the world.
“Not only for establishing women rights and gender equality, violence against women should be stopped for building a society based on equity and for overall development. The growing violence against women indicates towards the global gender inequity and political initiative is vital to remove this disparity,” she said this on Thursday in the inaugural function of two-day South Asian Gender Summit.Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) jointly organized the summit in Hotel Sonargaon. Shirin Akhter, MP, Julia Muller, FES’s Singapore representative, Henrich Meihach, addressed the Function, among others.
The state-minister also called for strengthening regional cooperation for establishing rights of the women and stopping violence against them. Representatives from host Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Singapore will present the current picture of the state of women in their respective countries. A set of recommendations will be made tomorrow based on those presentations.
