Cases against 7 mayors, 250 councillors aspirants: Police to launch crackdown

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is likely to launch massive crackdown against the fugitives, who are accused in different criminal cases, but contesting in the Dhaka City Corporation elections without obtaining bail.
“There are criminal cases against at least seven mayor and more than 250 councilor candidates. Of them, some are on bail and some are fugitives,” Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DMP, told the reporters at DMP Media Center in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
Police are trying to arrest the seven mayor and at least 200 councilor candidates of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). They have not yet obtained bail, Monirul Islam said.
The DMP has already has instructed the police stations to arrest them, he said. The list of the accused has also been supplied to the Police Headquarters and Ministry concerned, he said.
The arrest operation will be tough and it will continue until the accused candidates in different criminal cases are arrested or bailed out, the Police Joint Commissioner said.
Police is always ready to assist the election commission to hold a free, fare and impartial election, the DB official said.
There are 16 cases, including an arrest warrant, against Mirza Abbas, a mayor candidate.
The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation are scheduled to be held on April 28.
