The Narayanganj police said that they rescued Hafazat-e-Islam Bangladesh joint secretary general Mamunul Haque from a resort under Sonargaon upazila in the district as locals cordoned him when he was spending private time Saturday afternoon.
The district police superintendent Muhammad Zayedul Alam told media that the police, on information that some local people kept Mamunul cordoned in a room of a resort, rushed there.
He said that Mamunul was at the resort with a lady whom he claimed to be his second wife.
“After maghrib prayers, a good number of Mamunul’s supporters rushed to the resort and a tense situation was created there. Mamunul himself calmed them and we allowed him to go,” Inspector Tabedur Rahman of Sonargaon police station told media.
Locals said the Hefazat men appeared in the scene with a procession and carried out vandalism at the resort – Royal Resort.
They said Mamunul was found with the woman in a room of the resort.
“Some local residents apprehended him at the resort. A team of police rushed to the resort and took him to safety after the incident was reported,” said Tabedur Rahman.
He said the Hefazat leader has neither been arrested nor detained.
Earlier, a video that went viral on social media showed that some people were questioning Mamunul and he was claiming that the lady was his second wife and that they wedded two years ago.
“I came here [to the resort] to spend the holiday,” he was heard saying in the video clip.
