Police on Sunday foiled a ‘mourning rally’ arranged by Jatiya Oikya Front in front of Jatiya Press Club protesting the brutal killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.
The Oikya Front Convener, Dr Kamal Hossain, along with its several hundred leaders and activists brought out a rally wearing black badges and holding black flags from the Jatiya Press Club to march towards the Central Shaheed Minar around 5:10pm.
Minutes after the march of the rally, police obstructed it saying the alliance leaders were not being given permission of holding such rally. Although they tried to break the police barricade, they failed.
“Even tactfully, police forced to ply the public transports so that the rally do not
get any chance to reach to its destination at Shaeed Minar”, participants at the rally alleged.
In the meantime, the vehicle carrying, Dr Kamal Hossain, was bound to go to his Bailey Road residence while the alliance leaders left the spot in the face of obstruction by the law enforcers.
Earlier, the Oikya Front leaders held a public rally in the auditorium of the Jatiya Press Club protesting the murder of Abrar.
At the programme, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna announced to hold a public rally at any open space or ground in the city on October 18 on the same issue. Abrar Fahad, 21, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists of the university unit last week.
