Police have dispersed the students of medical and dental colleges, who took to the streets of the city’s Shahbagh intersection as part of their demand for a session-free medical academic year.
At that time at least five students were injured and 13 others arrested.
Hundreds of medical and dental college students brought out a procession from the campus and blocked the Shahbagh junction chanting slogans at 11:30 am on Sunday.
This caused huge traffic jam in and around Shahbagh and sufferings for the city dwellers.
As the blockade was not lifted soon, the police charged baton to free the road.
Some agitating students said that authorities are deaf to their rational demands.
The demands are:
1. Not to take professional examination during coronavirus pandemic
2. Completing courses in due time to reduce session jam
3. Not to take fees of more than 60 months in medical colleges
4. Authorities concerned will shoulder the responsibility of those who were infected for appearing in the examination during Covid-19 period.
About the demands, Dr Shahriar Nabi said if the students do not want to sit for the examinations in December, then it may be rescheduled by January or February next year. We are discussing the matter and positively thinking in this regard.
Earlier, several hundred medical and dental college students blocked the key Shahbagh intersection to press home several demands.
It is mentionable that they have been demonstrating for the last several days to force the authorities to accept their demands including starting online classes, ensuring session jam-free academic year and cutting fees.
