Unruly drivers are causing traffic to build up on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Comilla, police have said.
Vehicles were seen waiting in long lines at Padula Bazar, Biswa Road Railway Overpass, Gouripur and Daudkandi Toll Plaza on Friday noon.
“There is a sick competition among drivers who make random stops to pick up passengers and cause traffic jams. Police are working to clear the congestions,” said Poritosh Nath, superintendent of the Highway Police in Comilla.
At around 6am, an eight-kilometre long traffic jam was seen at Gouripur. At the same time, vehicles were stuck in a 13-kilometre traffic jam between Munshiganj’s Gazaria and Meghna Bridge.
With just few days left before Eid-ul-Azha, people are expected to start travelling out of capital Dhaka to spend the festival with families living in rural areas.
“There are more cars travelling the roads before this Eid. The numbers are higher compared to last Eid. Police are not that active. The toll process at Meghna Bridge takes too long. This is making us wait in traffic for hours,” said Soheil Ahmed, a bus driver for Shyamoli Paribahan.
Around 11,000 vehicles cross the Meghna Bridge every day, said a toll plaza official.
The number rose by 5,000 on Friday, he said.
