The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Thursday sent Police ASI Sadequl Islam of the Special Branch to the jail on the charge of claiming bribe to the wife of a High Court judge.
Magistrate Amirul Haider Chowdhury of the
CMM Court passed the order after Shahbagh Police Station OC Abu Bakr Siddique produced Sadequl Islam to his court. However, no remand plea was filed to put the accused police officer on remand, Besides, no petition was filed seeking bail for the accused.
The Special Branch officer of police was arrested on Wednesday following a High Court order over demanding bribe from apex court Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman’s wife.
The case docket says that Sadequl Islam went to the residence of the justice in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday for verification of his two daughters’ passports and demanded Tk 2000 from his wife. He identified himself as Sub Inspector Salam.
But as she refused to give the bribe, the ASI declined to verify the passports. Later, Justice Abu Taher informed the matter to Justice Quazi Rezaul Hoque who asked the police headquarters to bring the ASI to his bench on Wednesday.
