BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said, the police are acting as the main opponent of BNP in Khulna city polls field.
“BNP nominated mayor candidate in KCC polls Nazrul Islam Manju said that the voters were enormously supporting him. To check it, the government has been trying to use the police politically. Police everyday arresting whoever is the BNP’s probable polling agent. The main opponent of the BNP is Police instead of the Awmai League,” Mirza Fakhrul said it while inaugurating a photo exhibition on “34 Years of Politics, Struggle and Success of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia”‘ at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city.
He expressed his optimism that their candidate will win the KCC mayor post, which is scheduled to be held on May 15. However, much depends on fairness of vote casting and counting.
The leaders and the activists of the BNP in Khulna are being arrested every day. The ruling party is using the police.
He also called the people to be united and to form a national unity. Photojournalist Babul Talukdar organised the photo exhibition marking Begum Khaleda Zia’s 34 years of leadership as the BNP chairperson.
On May 10 in 1984, Khaleda Zia was elected the chairperson of the party and since then she has been leading the party holding the same post.
Khaleda has been in the old Dhaka’s abandoned central jail since February 8 as a special Dhaka judge’s court sentenced her to five-year jail in a graft case.
Beside this, BNP’s KCC mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Manju accused the police of conducting massive drive against the party’s leaders and activist across the city.
He said, “As a mayor candidate I have right to campaign. But I am here to brief the media that the police are arresting my party men from every area in the city. Police have become panic to the people. I have gone to thanas of the city with request to free my leaders and activists detained by police at night.”
He said the people are with him and he will win the race if the election is held in free and fair manner.
