MENTALLY-ILL Polash Mia (31) was arrested by police in the early hours of November 7 from his house at Datmondal village on charges of attacking and looting Hindu houses in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila on October 30. A month has gone by, he is still in jail. An English Daily reported the case on Tuesday. The only significant development after his arrest was, he was transferred from Brahmanbaria jail to Comilla jail as there was no good hospital in Brahmanbaria for treating patients with mental disorder. He is now kept in a cell reserved for prisoners with mental illness. According to Media report, Jail Superintendent at Comilla Central Jail said, ‘he behaves abnormally and hardly talks.’ His father is a poor day-labourer and is yet to move bail prayer before the court for his release as he has no financial capacity to hire a lawyer.

Probably Polash Mia’s crimes are — he is a Muslim, his house is adjacent to the place of occurrence, and it is suitable for police to arrest persons like him easily. Citing Nasirnagar locals a Media report said, most of the one hundred people arrested by now over the October 30 attacks were not involved in the incident, and Polash was one of the innocent victims of the blanket arrest. It is interesting that almost all residents of the village know that Polash is mentally ill. His father was frustrated and stopped his treatment two years back. The unfortunate father had to shackle his son in the house several times to prevent him from going out. In this backdrop only police could discover him as a criminal.

Attack on Hindus at Nasirnagar is undoubtedly an ugly inhuman act and the criminals involved in it must be punished. But in the name of police investigation, witch hunting is not acceptable. Victims have been repeatedly saying that the attackers were unknown outsiders.

Mass arrest by police is helping police and criminals. The police must take the trouble of arresting the right ones.

We want to see Polash released immediately and serious investigation to begin.
