Green activists on Monday demanded regular monitoring and report on available foods and drinks in the markets of the country for assuring public health safety.
They also demanded for non-profit strategy of the Safe Food Authority (SFA) of Bangladesh and develop public health-oriented strategies for assuring public health safety in the country, which SFA lags behind.
A roundtable discussion meeting was organised by the Poribesh Bachao Andolan (POBA) at its head office in the city titled ‘Chemical treated eggs and adulterated foods: Fragile role of the Authority’.
Chairman of POBA Abu Naser Khan presided at the programme while
Advocate Sayed Mahbubul Alam presented the key note paper. Joint Secretary of POBA Dr Lelin Chowdhury, member MA Wahed, Razia Samad, General Secretary of NASF Md Tayeb Ali, General Secretary of Bangladesh Centre for Human Rights and Development (BCHRD) Mahbubul Haque, President of Modern Club Abul Hasnat and member of Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust Atiq Rahman, among others, took part in the meeting.
Speakers underscored need of regular monitoring by the authority in the chicken firms of the country where the farmers are feeding high level of antibiotics than acceptable level and chemicalised feeds which have serious effects in the farm products like eggs and meats. It has adverse effect on human body after consumption.
But in the reality, the authorities are not monitoring the situation and no effective steps of banning such adulterated foods were observed in the country which is alarming.
Referencing a joint research of FAO and Bangladesh Government, Advocate Sayed Mahbubul Alam said, about 40 per cent of foods available in Bangladesh market contain three to twenty times higher contaminated ingredients which human body can accept.
“For attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country, we must ensure food safety for sustainable public health,” said Abu Naser Khan.
“Our country must have to develop strategies for assuring safe food for public and hold the foreign export markets of fish, vegetables and other agro-processed foods from the country with reputation.” he added.
Besides, they have also lamented that the role of the SFA is not satisfactory. It is not monitoring the food markets, producers’ activities for assuring public health safety. It is acting as a commercial organization trying to satisfy private companies of the country which is highly undesired.
According to them, SFA must assure food safety, quality of all local produced foods as well as imported foods and beverages. Otherwise, public health will face radical threats of contaminated foods and international export performance would be hampered.
