BSS, Rangamati :
Poaching of migratory birds continues unabated at the heart of the Kaptai Lake and in dense forests of Rangamati district ignoring the district administration’s warning against killing and trapping of the winged guests.
Thousands of migratory birds usually flock to different areas of Bangladesh to get rid of the severe cold in Siberian countries during the winter.
Although killing or trapping migratory birds is legally prohibited and a punishable act, desperate poachers are active in setting up traps to catch these guest birds for meat every day and selling those to local markets.
The meat is then sold to owners of hotels and restaurants in different
hilly markets, including Mainimukh Bazaar under Langadu upazila and upstream Jettyghat and Natun Bazaar under Kaptai upazila of the district.
Talking to BSS, Tofazzal Hussein upazila chairman of Langadu said an
awareness campaign should be launched to address poaching and sale of guest birds.
He said, adding, “I have already urged the forest department and the local administration to begin motivational campaign to stop poaching of migratory birds.”
Chairman of Kaptai union parishad Engineer Abdul Latif echoed the same, he added that there is no alternative to building awareness among people as the birds are essential for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity.
Executive director of a local non-governmental organization, Global Village, Fazleh Elahi, who is working for safe return of the migratory birds to their previous destination, said these birds are fond of searching food every morning. As a result they become target of poachers.
Migratory birds not only enrich Bangladesh’s bio-diversity by creating a balance in the ecosystem, but also enhance the beauty of the surrounding through their colorful presence, he added.
