The BNP says the prime minister’s remarks over graft allegations against its chief Khaleda Zia may influence the trials.
Speaking at a discussion on Saturday, senior leader Zainul Abedin Faruk questioned the Sheikh Hasina’s move to comment on a sub judice matter.
Addressing an event at Munich organised by the Awami League’s Germany chapter on Friday, Hasina said, “If the court finds evidence that she stole money, she will be punished.”
She was referring to the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft charges.
The BNP chairperson stands accused of embezzling around Tk 52.5 million of the trusts when she was the prime minister from 2001 to 2006.
The trials are in the final stage.
Reacting to Hasina’s remarks, Faruk said on Saturday : “It’s clear that if the honourable prime minister influences the judiciary, then Khaleda Zia will be convicted.
“Was it at all appropriate for her to make a comment on a party forum before the verdict?”
Faruk, who is in the BNP chief’s council of advisers, said if the judiciary is independent and the judge is unbiased, then it will be proven that Khaleda is not involved in the embezzlement.
“We wish to know why the approval was stalled,” he said.
“Whoever misled the government has embarrassed the people of Bangladesh. They do not understand the producer is Irrfan Khan. For the past five years we have tried to show our cinema in a positive light on the world stage. Now this is getting us negative headlines . We hope the government understands and removes this hurdle so that we can go to the censor board.”
Farooki also remains firm on his stance regarding Shaon’s objections. The story is not a biopic or a depiction of a period in the writer’s life, he told bdnews24.com, He insists ‘Doob’ is an original creation.
Farooki plans for a simultaneous initial release of the film in three countries.
