Chittagong Bureau :
Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the honesty, political wisdom and commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would act as the driving force for the party stalwarts to make the ruling Awami League victorious in the next general election.
The inherent leadership quality of Sheikh Hasina, acclaimed both at home and abroad, would thwart all sinister moves by vested quarters against the ongoing development spree and help the Awami League win the next election race to elevate Bangladesh to a new height, he said.
“Sheikh Hasina is one of the 5th honest statesmen among 173 countries …intrigues are still on against development,” Quader told a memorial meeting on former mayor of Chittagong Mohiuddin Chowdhury in the city’s Laldigi Maidan here.
The AL general secretary said massive development programmes had perplexed the vested quarters out to impede the democratic polity and current development activities.
Quader, also roads transport and bridges minister, urged all concerned to forge a united resistance against sinister forces in the next general polls.
Paying rich tribute to former Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation and President of city AL A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury for his outstanding contributions to development and welfare of Chittagong, the minister said Mohiuddin had always faced bravely any politically odd situations.
“We have many things to learn from the prolonged political legacy of Mohiuddin Chowdhury that he left for the rank and file of AL”, the minister said.
“Chowdhury did a lot for social, cultural, organizational and educational fields in Chittagong during his long political carrier,” Quader added.
Organized by Chittagong city, north and south districts of AL, the memorial meeting was addressed by Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain as special guest.
Presided over by acting President of Chittagong city AL Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, it was addressed, among others, by AL Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, AL Publicity Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, MP, Organizing Secretary A K M Enamul Hoque Shamim, late Mohiuddin’s eldest son and AL Organizing Secretary Mohiubul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Ctg Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Deputy Press and Publication Secretary Aminul Islam Amin, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplop Barua, Chittagong south district AL president Nurul Alam Chowdhury, south district president Muslem Uddin Chowdhury, Dr Afsarul Amin, MP, A B M Fazle Karim Chowdhury, MP, Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, MP, Didarul Alam, MP and Dr Abu Reza Mohammad Nezam Uddin Nodvi.

It was Mohiuddin Chowdhury from Chittagong who raised his voice against tragic assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members in 1975, the minister added.
Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the next election will be held as per the constitution.
