BSS, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday requested the Russian government to speed up the implementation process of the much-awaited Rooppur nuclear power plant project at Ishwardi in Pabna.
Sheikh Hasina made the request when Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander A Nikolaev made a courtesy call on her at Prime Minister’s Office here this morning.
PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri briefed reporters after the meeting.
During the meeting, the Russian ambassador handed over a letter of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the letter, the Russian Prime Minister said, “I would like to note that the dynamic development of traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Bangladesh has recently reached a new qualitative level.”
The letter also said, “Owing to active cooperation between the two governments, large-scale projects are being implemented in the spheres of natural gas production and supply, agriculture as well as conventional and nuclear power in Bangladesh.”
Sheikh Hasina also extended greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev through the envoy.
Nikolaev said that Bangladesh has attained various socioeconomic achievements over the last six years under the dynamic and able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh earlier signed a deal with Russia’s state-owned nuclear giant Rosatom to construct the nuclear plant in the country’s northwest region.
Russia will provide all assistance under the agreement for setting up the plant, including providing the fuel and taking back the used fuel.
A total of 262 acres of land have been acquired to set up two units of the plant with a capacity of 2,000-MW. Each of these units is expected to cost $1.5 to $2 billion.
