Sarwaruddin, Ctg Bureau :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the newly- constructed water treatment plant at Rangunia in Chittagong after the name of Prime Minister as “Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant” of Chittagong WASA yesterday afternoon.
The water project cost involved Tk.1,848 crores with the financial assistance of JICA of Japan over 35 acres of land in Rangunia upazila which is 45 kitometers of Chittagong city.
Prime Minister inaugurated the water plant located at Rangunia on the north bank of Karnaphuli River through teleconference at Chittagong Boat Club premises as Chief Guest in the afternoon.
The minister of the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Khondakar Mosharraf Hossain was present at the function as special guest.
Besides, ministers, local law makers, Awami League leaders and elites were present at the function, according to sources in Chittagong Water Supply Sewerage Authority (Chittagong WASA).
The sufferings of people of Chittagong from shortage of drinking water is going to end following the inauguration of the newly constructed Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant in Chittagong.
Sources said Karnaphuli Water Supply Project was newly renamed as Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant after completion of the project in a circular issued on January 19 last. Chittagong Water Supply Sewerage Authority launched the project on a trial basis on November 1 last year. The mega project was formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday.
Managing Director of CWASA Engineer AKM Fazlullah said the age-old rundown supply lines cannot withstand the huge pressure of the increased supply of water. Therefore, the supply lines are developing leakages frequently.
Engineer AKM Fazlullah said, “The leakage repairing task has now emerged to be a challenge for us. We have so far repaired 400 leakages from November 1. We have information that more 300 leakages have developed in different parts of the city.”
CWASA can now supply only 210 million litres of water daily (which is only 42% of the total demand) against the daily demand of 500 million liter of water. The mega project will bridge the huge deficit between supply and demand, he observed.
AKM Fazlullah also said that Chittagong WASA could not undertake any project after 1987 and with the launching of the mega project, the city dwellers would get more 143 million liters of water (MLD) per day which will cover about 70 percent of the total demand of water.
