The government is being misled by the fact that under parliamentary system there cannot be elected government at election time. Everywhere it is an unelected caretaker government that remains in power. If we want parliamentary system, we have to follow the system.

Barrister Mainul Hosein made the comment taking part in a talk show in SATV last night on a topic titled ‘Bangladesh now and tomorrow.’ Other discussants on the panel were Enam Ahmed Chowdhury and Dr. AK Abdul Momen. Mahmud Al Faisal hosted the talks.

Barrister Mainul said, with party government in power, Election Commission is the government and the Prime Minister has to ensure free election. No Election Commission can be more powerful than the Prime Minister.
Our struggle of long years in Pakistan is based on a dream and the 1972 Constitution is the embodiment of our national dream.

Our dream was not shaped during the Liberation War in India. The Liberation War was to realise our dream formulated under the 6-point programme.

On future of Bangladesh, keeping in mind the coming new year, Mr Hosein said good future does not come as a miracle.

The present conditions of political intolerance, with no accountability of the government, presence of mismanagement within the governments, police excesses, no election for peaceful transfer of power, endemic corruption etc cannot be considered the basis of a bright future. Things will become worse and more violent if politics remain as they are.

Younger generation must be brave to enjoy the freedom is Barrister Mainul’s new year message on the occasion.
